The ELAND (Taurotragus oryx) is a large antelope with a striking coat varying from gentle greys through to a desert tan and occasionally brown. It lives in large herds that  migrate widely in search of good grazing, as this species prefers semi-deserts, dry grasslands and the light savannah north of the Orange river as well as the light woodland in KwaZulu-Natal.

 It can exist for long periods without open water. The Eland is a nocturnal animal and the vegetation that absorbs moisture from the atmosphere at night provides ample fluid sustenance.

 The coat is a typically tawny and desert sand colour, mottled around the neck and with a tendency for the female (generally half the bulk of their male counterpart) to have feint white stripes on her flanks.

 Unlike most of our other hides, this is a very fine hair and short, with often a faint sheen apparent. If we're lucky, there will be a little of the distinctive white stripe to use too.

All our sporrans are lined with our signature burgundy suede, for comfort.
